Pune: AI Cameras To Monitor Traffic Violations - Pilot Project Launched On Fergusson College Road
Pune, May 28, 2025: In a significant move towards modernizing traffic regulation, the Pune Police has introduced an AI-based Traffic Violation Detection System as a pilot project on Fergusson College Road. This initiative aims to automate the monitoring and enforcement of traffic rules through artificial intelligence, enhancing road discipline and easing congestion.
The project is being carried out under the leadership of Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, Joint Commissioner Ranjankumar Sharma, Additional Commissioner (Eastern Region) Manoj Patil, and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Dr. Sandeep Bhajibhakare, in collaboration with SENSEN AI, represented by Vijay Khurpe.
According to a press release by Additional Commissioner Manoj Patil, the AI-enabled cameras are programmed to identify No Parking and double-parking violations, as well as vehicles that obstruct traffic by being parked on the main road for over three minutes. Once such violations are detected, penalties will be issued automatically via the city’s CCTV challan system.
This initiative, launched as a Proof of Concept (POC), is the first of its kind in Pune. The system will instantly verify vehicle number plates and determine any infractions in real-time. To create transparency and public awareness, live information about detected violations will also be displayed on digital screens installed along Fergusson College Road.
Apart from enforcement, the project seeks to educate the public on traffic rules and promote civic responsibility. The effectiveness of this trial will be assessed, and based on the results, authorities plan to extend the system to other critical roads and intersections in the city.
The Pune Traffic Department has urged citizens to strictly adhere to traffic laws, as the system is fully automated and will initiate fines without human intervention. The initiative is expected to bring about more efficient traffic management and safer commuting for all.
