Five Drown in Two Tragic Incidents in Pune District, Including Four Teenagers Near Chakan
Pune, June 1 — In two separate incidents of drowning in Pune district, five young lives were lost over the weekend, sparking renewed concerns over safety near water bodies. Four teenage boys drowned in a percolation tank in Kadachiwadi near Chakan on Saturday, while a 17-year-old boy lost his life during a picnic in Lonavla on Friday.
Four Boys Drown in Percolation Tank in Kadachiwadi
According to police officials, four boys from Medankarwadi drowned while swimming in a percolation tank in Kadachiwadi around 11 am on Saturday.
“Preliminary investigation suggests that the boys were unaware of the depth of the water and entered it without realizing the danger,” said Pramod Wagh, Senior Inspector at Chakan Police Station. “When they did not return home, their parents approached us. We later discovered their clothes and footwear on the banks of the tank.”
Chakan police, with the help of local trekking groups, conducted a search operation, and all four bodies were recovered by evening. The deceased boys belonged to families that had migrated to the area for work. Post-mortem examinations have been conducted, and a case of accidental death has been registered.
One Teen Drowns During Lonavla Picnic
In a separate incident on Friday, 17-year-old, a resident of Kasarwadi, drowned during a picnic near a dam in Lonavla. He was part of a group of 13 friends who had traveled to the tourist town for a day outing.
According to Kishor Dhumal, Senior Inspector at Lonavla Rural Police Station, “While some members of the group entered the water, He was swept away by strong currents. Despite immediate efforts by his friends and local rescue teams, he could not be saved.”
His body was recovered later in the evening with the help of the Shiv Durga rescue team and has been sent for post-mortem.
Rising Drowning Cases Raise Safety Concerns
The twin tragedies have prompted appeals from authorities for increased awareness about water safety, especially as the monsoon season approaches. Police have urged parents to monitor children’s activities and advise against unsupervised swimming in unfamiliar water bodies.
