Android 16 Begins Rollout: Smarter Notifications, Better Accessibility & Big Boost for Tablets
Google has officially started rolling out Android 16, bringing a host of new features, enhanced security, and improved performance — especially for tablets and foldables. Unlike previous releases, Android 16 has arrived earlier than expected and is currently available for Pixel devices, with other Android smartphones to follow in the coming months.
Smarter, More Useful Notifications
Android 16 introduces real-time live notifications, allowing apps like ride-hailing and food delivery platforms to send dynamic updates directly to your lock screen or status bar — no need to constantly refresh the app. Notifications from the same app are now automatically grouped to reduce clutter and enhance usability.
Google is collaborating with manufacturers like Samsung, OnePlus, and OPPO to integrate these improvements into their custom user interfaces, such as Samsung’s Now Bar and OPPO’s Live Alerts.
Improved Accessibility with Better Hearing Aid Integration
For users with hearing aids, Android 16 offers the ability to switch between the hearing aid’s mic and the phone’s built-in microphone during calls, leading to clearer conversations in noisy environments. Users can also access new hearing aid controls directly within system settings, streamlining volume and customization options.
Enhanced Security with One-Tap Protection
The new “Advanced Protection” feature brings Google’s highest level of mobile device security yet. It’s designed to protect users against phishing, malicious apps, scam calls, and unsafe websites. And unlike complex settings of the past, it can now be enabled with just one tap in the phone’s settings menu.
Desktop-Like Experience for Tablets and Foldables
Android 16 significantly enhances multitasking on large-screen devices. Users can now open, resize, and move app windows freely, mirroring a desktop environment. Other updates rolling out soon include:
- Custom keyboard shortcuts
- Taskbar overflow handling
- Testing support for external display connections
These improvements aim to transform Android tablets and foldables into more powerful productivity tools.
Eligible Devices and How to Update
Android 16 is currently rolling out to the following Pixel devices:
- Pixel 6, 6 Pro, 6a
- Pixel 7, 7 Pro, 7a
- Pixel 8, 8 Pro, 8a
- Pixel 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, 9 Pro Fold, 9a
