Big e-Aadhaar Update Coming: No More Photocopies Needed, Easier Process for Changes – Key Steps Inside
QR code-based app to simplify sharing, major update processes to go fully digital by November
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is set to transform how Aadhaar is accessed, shared, and updated. A major digital revamp is underway, with a new QR code-based application that will eliminate the need for physical photocopies of Aadhaar cards. The app will allow users to share digital versions either complete or masked securely and with consent.
Expected to roll out fully by November, the app is part of a broader initiative aimed at reducing in-person visits to Aadhaar centres. Except for biometric submissions, updates like address changes, name corrections, and date of birth adjustments will be handled digitally through backend integration with official databases such as birth records, matriculation documents, driving licences, passports, PAN cards, PDS and MNREGA systems.
The QR code sharing feature is expected to benefit a wide range of services, from hotel check-ins and rail travel to identity verification during property registration. The focus is on empowering users with full control over their Aadhaar data, ensuring it is only shared with explicit consent.
UIDAI is also in talks with sub-registrars to make Aadhaar verification a part of property registration processes, to curb document fraud. Discussions are also underway to integrate Aadhaar updates with CBSE and other education boards to simplify mandatory biometric updates for children between the ages of 5–7 and 15–17 years. A dedicated campaign will be launched to address these pending updates covering nearly 18 crore Aadhaar holders in these age groups.
In the pipeline is further integration with electricity records to enhance convenience and cross-verification. UIDAI is actively collaborating with security agencies and hospitality partners to extend Aadhaar’s secure and optional use beyond mandatory domains.
This digital shift not only promises to simplify user experience but also aims to enhance security and reduce document fraud across sectors.
