MUMBAI: Seven Bangladeshi nationals were arrested from Andheri East (Mumbai) and Katraj (Pune) on Thursday for residing in India without valid visas. According to police officials, these individuals were illegal immigrants who had allegedly entered and settled in the country with the help of agents facilitating unlawful travel and accommodation.

The arrests began with a tip-off about Bayazid Ayub Shaikh (24), who was spotted in Andheri East and reportedly in contact with other Bangladeshi nationals living in Indian cities without legal documents. A police team reached the location and detained Shaikh. Upon inspection, his identity documents revealed he was from Bangladesh and lacked a valid Indian visa.

When interrogated, Shaikh admitted he was about to meet two Bangladeshi women in Andheri. The Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) soon located and detained the two women, both of whom also failed to produce valid visas and were confirmed to be Bangladeshi citizens. The three were arrested under the Passport (Entry into India) Rules 1950Foreigners Order, 1948, and the Foreigners Act, 1946.

Further investigation revealed that the same agent who facilitated Shaikh’s illegal stay had also sent more Bangladeshi women to Pune. Acting swiftly, the Crime Detection Squad traced and detained five more women in Katraj on Thursday.
