PMC Issues Boil Water Advisory After Heavy Rains in Pune
With the start of the rainy season, several areas in Pune have reported muddy tap water. In response, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has issued an advisory asking residents to boil their drinking water before use. According to PMC, heavy rainfall in the catchment areas has led to muddy water entering the dams and canals that supply water to the city. Although the water is being treated, the advisory stresses that residents should still take extra precautions.
People are advised to use alum to settle impurities, filter the water, and boil it before consumption. These steps are especially important to prevent the spread of waterborne diseases like diarrhoea, dysentery, cholera, typhoid, and hepatitis.

The advisory specifically mentions newly added village areas under PMC limits, such as Narhe, Dhayari, Nanded, and Khadakwasla, where risks may be higher due to infrastructure limitations.
Last year, these areas saw an outbreak of Guillain-Barré Syndrome, which resulted in at least 10 deaths in Pune district. With that in mind, PMC is taking early action this year to avoid similar health emergencies. Pune gets its drinking water mainly from the Khadakwasla, Varasgaon, Panshet, and Temghar dams, which are currently receiving large amounts of rainwater.
Residents are urged to follow the guidelines strictly until water quality returns to normal. Simple precautions can help prevent serious health issues.
