Mindtree Co-founder Subroto Bagchi Donated Hundreds of Crores—But Says This Re 1 Cheque Is His Greatest Wealth
In a world where success is often showcased through luxury cars, awards, and headlines, Subroto Bagchi—co-founder of IT giant Mindtree—has shared a different vision of true wealth. Recently, Bagchi posted a photo on X (formerly Twitter) of a simple Re 1 cheque from the State Bank of India, calling it “the biggest wealth in this one life that I would never ever part with.”
The cheque is deeply symbolic: it represents his final annual salary as Chief Advisor to the Government of Odisha for Institution and Capacity Building, a role he served for eight years from 2016. Bagchi had chosen to accept only Re 1 per year as a token of commitment, refusing any financial reward for his public service. The image he shared shows the eighth and final cheque—marking the close of what he described as one of the most meaningful chapters of his life.
Reflecting on the experience, Bagchi wrote, “For every year of the work I did with the government, the deal was that they paid me Re 1. For the 8 years out there, I got 8 cheques and this one here was my last salary drawn.”
While Bagchi is known for building a billion-dollar tech enterprise, he and his wife Susmita have also pledged hundreds of crores to causes such as cancer care and skills development. Yet, for Bagchi, this modest cheque holds more emotional value than any donation or business success—it embodies service, humility, and purpose.
Unlike many corporate leaders who move into government advisory roles for high pay, Bagchi made it clear his mission in Odisha wasn’t about money. His work was hands-on: from leading the Odisha Skill Development Authority to acting as the state’s chief COVID-19 spokesperson, Bagchi’s commitment extended far beyond a ceremonial title.
His story has touched thousands online. After sharing the cheque, Bagchi received a flood of appreciation. Comments praised his humility and integrity, with users writing:
- “You could have made Rs 8,000 crores in 8 years in the corporate world. Salute!”
- “Your gesture is a lotus in the mud of public virtue—quiet, yet deeply meaningful.”
- “A living legend who thinks for the country rather than for self.”
Bagchi’s journey—from starting as a clerk in Odisha’s Industries Department to becoming a celebrated entrepreneur and returning to serve his home state—shows that true success isn’t always reflected in bank balances or public applause. Instead, it is defined by the difference one makes.
At a time when wealth and recognition often overshadow purpose, Bagchi’s treasured Re 1 cheque stands as a quiet yet powerful reminder: real wealth lies not in what we keep, but in what we choose to give.
