Pune,July 8, 2025: The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has planned an ambitious project to rejuvenate the Pavana River, which flows through the heart of the city for a stretch of 24.40 km. For this purpose, PCMC has appointed experienced technical consultants M/s HCP Design and Management Pvt. Ltd. The consultant has conducted a comprehensive survey of the entire river and prepared a detailed project report aimed at reducing water pollution and implementing flood control measures.
The hydrology and hydraulics report for the Pavana River Rejuvenation Project has been prepared by the Central Water and Power Research Station (CWPRS), Pune, under the Government of India.
PCMC had applied for the Environmental Clearance (EC) for this project to the Maharashtra Government on December 10, 2019. The proposal was approved by the State Expert Appraisal Committee 3 (SEAC-3) on August 8, 2023. Subsequently, the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) held several meetings to review the proposal. On May 15, 2025, the SEIAA organized another review meeting where the PCMC Commissioner presented detailed information about the project.
The proceedings of the SEIAA meeting held on July 7, 2025, confirmed that the Pavana River Rejuvenation Project has been granted Environmental Clearance.
Once funds are received from the state and central governments, tender processes will begin, and work on the river rejuvenation project will commence. This project aims to protect riverbanks, prevent erosion, enhance biodiversity, create habitats for birds and aquatic life, and overall restore the natural ecosystem of the Pavana River.
