Despite the spiritual significance of Guru Purnima, July 10 is not a listed bank holiday, banks across India will function as usual.

If you’re wondering whether banks will be closed today, Thursday, July 10, on the occasion of Guru Purnima, the answer is no. Banks across India, including public sector banks like the State Bank of India (SBI) and private institutions, will remain open. Guru Purnima is not a gazetted holiday this year, and July 10 is not included in the Reserve Bank of India’s official list of bank holidays for 2025.

As per the RBI’s guidelines, banks observe closures on Sundays and the second and fourth Saturdays of every month. In addition to these weekly offs, there are seven state-specific bank holidays in July 2025, varying across regions due to local festivals and observances.

What Is Guru Purnima?

Guru Purnima is a deeply revered festival observed by Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains. Celebrated on the full moon day (Purnima) of the Hindu month of Ashadha (June–July), the day honours spiritual and academic teachers.

  • In Hinduism, it marks the birth of Maharishi Veda Vyasa, the sage credited with compiling the Mahabharata and other sacred texts. He is considered one of the greatest gurus in Indian tradition.
  • Buddhists commemorate this day as the occasion when Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon at Sarnath after attaining enlightenment.
  • In Jainism, the day is observed in reverence to Lord Mahavira and his chief disciple Gautam Swami.

Despite its religious and cultural significance, Guru Purnima does not figure as a mandatory public or bank holiday, and operations in banking institutions will continue as scheduled.
