Aadhaar Card Holders Alert: List of New Documents Needed for Updates

The Aadhaar card has become an essential part of every Indian’s identity. Whether you’re opening a bank account, applying for a government subsidy, or simply verifying your identity, Aadhaar is now one of the most widely accepted documents. With its growing importance, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has announced new regulations set to take effect from the financial year 2025-26. These changes aim to streamline the update process and prevent misuse of Aadhaar credentials.

Under the new guidelines, specific documents will become mandatory for anyone looking to apply for a new Aadhaar or update their existing details—such as name, address, or photo. The rules are not just limited to Indian citizens living in India but also cover Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), children above the age of five, and foreign nationals residing in India on long-term visas.

As part of its efforts to strengthen the integrity of the Aadhaar system, UIDAI has emphasized a “One Person, One Aadhaar” policy. This means that individuals who have been issued more than one Aadhaar card will only be allowed to keep their first one—any duplicate Aadhaar numbers will be rendered invalid.

Who Will Be Affected?

These updated norms will apply to:

  • Indian citizens
  • Indians living abroad (NRIs)
  • Children aged five years and above
  • Foreign nationals residing in India with long-term visas

List of Valid Documents Required for Aadhaar Updates

To make any changes or updates to your Aadhaar card—whether it’s your name, photo, date of birth, or address—you will need to provide one or more of the following documents:

  • Indian Passport (accepted for all: identity, address, relationship, and date of birth)
  • PAN Card
  • Voter ID
  • Ration Card
  • Driving License
  • Pension Card
  • Any Government-Issued Certificate

These documents are mandatory and will be required at the time of submission for changes to be accepted.

How to Make Updates to Your Aadhaar

There are two main ways to update your Aadhaar card:

1. Online via the UIDAI Website

For minor changes like updating your address, you can log in to the official UIDAI website using your Aadhaar number and a one-time password (OTP) sent to your registered mobile number.

2. Offline at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra (Service Center)

For updates related to name, gender, date of birth, or biometric data (like fingerprints or iris scans), a physical visit to an authorized Aadhaar Seva Kendra is mandatory.

You can also update your mobile number and email ID through both modes, although biometric updates strictly require an in-person visit.

How Long Does the Update Take?

Once you’ve submitted your request along with valid documents, the update process can take anywhere between 30 to 90 days to reflect in the system.
