Know whether natural disaster damage is covered under your vehicle insurance, and how to claim it if needed

Every year, natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes, landslides, and storms cause massive destruction to life and property in India. While government agencies and disaster response teams stay on alert during such times, many car owners are left wondering — if my vehicle is damaged in a natural disaster, will my insurance policy cover the loss?

Is Your Car Covered Against Natural Disasters?

The answer depends on the type of insurance policy you have.

Third-Party Insurance

This is the basic mandatory insurance required by law in India. However, it only covers damages caused to another person or property. It does not cover any damage to your own vehicle, even if the damage is due to a natural calamity like floods, earthquakes, or storms.

Comprehensive Insurance

To protect your own vehicle from natural disasters, you must opt for a Comprehensive Insurance Policy. This type of policy does cover damage resulting from:

  • Floods and heavy rainfall
  • Waterlogging
  • Cyclones and storms
  • Earthquakes
  • Landslides or land subsidence
  • Hailstorms
  • Fire or lightning
  • Falling trees or poles

If you live in a region prone to natural disasters, having a comprehensive policy is highly recommended.

Important Note: Engine Protection is Not Always Included

Most basic comprehensive plans do not automatically cover engine damage, which is especially risky during floods. In such situations, vehicles are prone to hydrolock, a condition where water enters the engine and causes severe damage.

To protect against this, you must opt for an Engine Protect Add-On Cover. So while buying or renewing your insurance, double-check if this cover is included, especially during the monsoon season.

How to Claim Insurance in Case of Disaster Damage?

If your vehicle is damaged due to a natural calamity, here’s what you need to do:

  1. Inform your insurer immediately after the incident.
  2. Do not attempt to start a flood-damaged vehicle, especially if water has entered the engine.
  3. Click photos or videos of the damage for documentation.
  4. File a claim through your insurer’s helpline, website, or mobile app.
  5. surveyor will assess the damage before the claim is processed.

To ensure you’re not left footing a massive repair bill after a natural disaster, make sure your car is covered under a comprehensive policy with necessary add-ons like engine protection. A small investment in the right coverage can save you from major financial setbacks in unpredictable weather conditions.
