Pune: BJ Medical College Interns Launch Indefinite Strike Over Delay In Three-Month Stipend
Pune, July 15, 2025: Intern doctors from the 2020 batch at BJ Medical College and Sassoon General Hospital began an indefinite strike on Monday, protesting the non-payment of their stipends for the past three months. The interns said the prolonged delays have left them financially distressed and warned of severe disruption in patient care services if their concerns remain unresolved.
Primary and emergency medical services at Sassoon Hospital are likely to be impacted, as intern doctors form the backbone of these departments. Holding the administration responsible, the interns demanded immediate action to address their grievances.

The interns, who started their duties on April 5, claim they have not received any stipend since then. They alleged that administrative lapses—including compulsory bank account openings with a particular bank, absence of key staff, and delays in forwarding documents to the treasury—have worsened the situation.
In a letter to the college dean, the interns highlighted issues such as unkept promises about payments, fabricated claims of missing attendance records, and a lack of written assurances from authorities. “For over three months, we’ve been working without pay. It’s become impossible to fulfill our responsibilities while managing personal expenses,” said one intern.
Their demands include the immediate release of pending stipends, implementation of a transparent payment system, and assurance that no punitive measures will be taken against those participating in the strike.
