Swachh Survekshan 2024-25: Maharashtra Wins 10 National Awards; Saswad Wins In Clean City League
New Delhi, July 17, 2025: Maharashtra has reaffirmed its dominance in urban cleanliness by securing 10 national awards in the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban. Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation topped the country, bringing laurels to the state.
At a ceremony held at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi, President Droupadi Murmu presented the awards in the presence of Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal, Minister of State Tokhan Sahu, and other senior officials. Representing Maharashtra, Minister of State for Urban Development Madhuri Misal, Principal Secretary Dr. K.H. Govindraj, and State Mission Director Navnath Wath were also present.
Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation clinched the first rank nationwide in the 3-10 lakh population category, with Commissioner Radha Binod Sharma accepting the award alongside the minister.
Other notable achievements include:
- Karad Municipality (50,000-3 lakh population): 2nd rank nationwide
- Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation: Won the “Super Swachh League City” award in the above-10 lakh population category.
- Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation: Ranked 7th in India and 1st in Maharashtra, also earning the coveted 7-Star Garbage Free City and Water Plus certifications.
Smaller towns like Lonavala, Vita, Saswad, Deolali Pravara, Panchgani, and Panhala also secured places in the Super Swachh League across various population categories.
President Murmu praised the winning cities, emphasizing that cleanliness is the foundation not just for public health but also for social and economic progress. She lauded the increasing participation of women in the cleanliness movement and called for the adoption of machine-hole systems to replace manholes for better sanitation worker safety.
The 2024-25 survey assessed over 4,500 cities across 10 key parameters, including waste segregation, citizen participation, and eco-friendly initiatives, under the theme “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.” Nearly 3,000 evaluators surveyed 11 lakh households over 45 days, engaging 14 crore citizens in the process.
Minister Madhuri Misal noted that Maharashtra’s consistent achievements in waste management, citizen engagement, and use of advanced technologies set an inspiring example for the rest of the country.
