In Hindu culture, Deep Amavasya, also known as Ashadhi Amavasya, is a spiritually significant day observed on the new moon of the Ashadha month, marking the transition into the holy month of Shravan. This year, Deep Amavasya falls on July 24, 2025 (Thursday), and ends on July 25, 2025 (Friday).

Importance of Lighting Lamps

In Hindu tradition, the lamp (deep) symbolizes light, purity, knowledge, and divine energy. Lighting a lamp in the home altar signifies offering one’s inner light and devotion to the divine. It dispels darkness—both physical and spiritual—and brings peace and positivity to the home. Lamps hold importance in every auspicious occasion, such as aarti, birthday rituals, or the beginning of ceremonies.

Significance of Deep Amavasya

Deep Amavasya is especially observed in Maharashtra and Karnataka with great devotion. On this day, people clean and worship all the lamps (clay or metal) in their homes, including diyas, samais, and niranjans. This ritual is believed to drive away the gloom of the monsoon and welcome the brightness of the upcoming Shravan month. Lamps are lit across the house, near the Tulsi plant, and at doorways.

Balwadkar

The puja involves offering sweet dishes (naivedya), reading religious stories associated with the season (Chaturmas), and praying for peace and prosperity.

Welcoming the Month of Shravan

Deep Amavasya signifies preparation for Shravan, a month filled with festivals, fasts, and religious ceremonies. Lighting lamps on this day spiritually welcomes the sacred month.

Deep Amavasya Naivedya Tradition

There is a local custom of offering edible lamps made of wheat or millet flour as naivedya. These are symbolic of gratitude and devotion.

Pitru Tarpan and Goddess Worship

This day is also considered auspicious for ancestral offerings (Pitru Tarpan), believed to remove ancestral doshas and bring blessings. In some regions, Goddess Lakshmi and Durga are also worshipped for wealth, protection, and harmony.

Story of Deep Amavasya

An ancient tale speaks of a devoted daughter-in-law who performed Deep Pujan with sincerity. One day, after secretly eating food, she lied and blamed mice, leading to disgrace and her expulsion. Later, the king (her father-in-law) saw the household lamps speaking amongst themselves during a hunting trip. One lamp revealed that worship had ceased in their home due to false allegations. Realizing the truth, the king brought her back with honor. Her devotion to the lamps had protected her.

Misconception About “Gatari Amavasya”

Some people wrongly refer to Ashadhi Amavasya as Gatari Amavasya, associating it with parties involving alcohol and meat before Shravan. However, the term “Gatari” is a distortion of “Kashtahari” (hard worker). Traditionally, farmers celebrated this day as a break from the hard monsoon labor by performing Deep Pujan to express gratitude and prepare for the spiritually charged month of Shravan. Thus, the current interpretation of “Gatari” is a misconception.
