Nilkantheshwar Temple, located near Pune, is a beautiful and peaceful spot that attracts both devotees and tourists, especially during the holy month of Shravan. Set atop a hill near Khadakwasla and Panshet dams, this temple dedicated to Lord Shiva becomes a serene pilgrimage site in this sacred season. The name Nilkantheshwar comes from “Neelkanth,” which means “blue throat,” a name for Lord Shiva. According to Hindu mythology, during the famous “Samudra Manthan” (churning of the ocean), a deadly poison came out. Lord Shiva drank the poison to save the world, which turned his throat blue. This temple is built to honor that form of Shiva.
Although the temple mainly worships Lord Shiva, the premises are filled with various statues of other Hindu gods, goddesses, and mythological scenes. One of the most eye-catching sculptures is a depiction of the Samudra Manthan itself.
Reaching Nilkantheshwar Temple requires a short hike. From the parking area, it takes around 30 to 45 minutes to walk uphill to the temple. The trekking path is about a kilometer long, wide, and well-maintained, making it ideal even for beginners. The journey is as rewarding as the destination, with fresh air and scenic views all around.
Once at the top, visitors can enjoy stunning views of the surrounding valleys, rivers, and dams. On clear days, you can even spot Sinhagad, Rajgad, and Torna forts in the distance. The temple is especially popular during sunrise and sunset when the sky lights up beautifully.

The temple is around 40 km from Pune city, about 37 km from Swargate, and 41 km from the Pune railway station. You can get there by bus or, more conveniently, by taxi or cab. Many prefer hiring a cab for a day to explore the area comfortably.
