Maharashtra Government To Launch App-Based Transport Service To Compete With Ola, Uber
Mumbai | July 28, 2025 – In a major move aimed at providing employment opportunities to local youth and breaking the monopoly of private ride-hailing giants, the Maharashtra government has announced plans to launch its own app-based transport services that will include rickshaws, taxis, and e-bikes.
Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik revealed that the initiative is designed to directly challenge private players like Ola and Uber by offering a government-backed alternative. The upcoming app-based platform may be named ‘Jai Maharashtra’, ‘Maha-Ride’, ‘Maha-Yatri’, or ‘Maha-Go’, with the final branding yet to be confirmed.

The platform is being developed in collaboration with the Maharashtra Institute for Transport Technology (MITT) and MITRA, along with discussions involving private tech companies. Sarnaik emphasized that the service will prioritize transparency, affordability, and employment generation, particularly for Marathi-speaking youth.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar are expected to give the final approval soon, after which the app will be officially rolled out.
As part of the employment initiative, Mumbai Bank will offer vehicle purchase loans at a concessional 10% interest rate to unemployed youth. Additionally, several state-run corporations including the Annasaheb Economic Development Corporation, Denotified Nomadic Tribes Corporation, OBC Corporation, and MSDC will provide 11% interest subsidy, effectively making the loan interest-free.
Sarnaik also stated that the new app will follow the central government’s aggregator guidelines, with the final policy framework in its last stages. He criticized existing private aggregators for exploiting both drivers and passengers and affirmed that the state has the infrastructure, technology, and workforce to run such a service efficiently.
A crucial meeting is scheduled for August 5 at Mantralaya, where technical experts and officials, including MLA Pravin Darekar, will finalize the app’s development roadmap.
