Mumbai | July 29, 2025 — Shocking dashcam footage has surfaced revealing the terrifying moment a container truck lost control due to brake failure and triggered a massive pile-up involving over 20 vehicles on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. The incident occurred along the Khopoli route on Saturday and has since gone viral on social media, offering crucial insight into the chain of events that led to the tragic crash.
The footage shows the speeding truck veering sharply to the left in what appears to be a last-minute attempt by the driver to minimize impact by avoiding the central lanes, which were packed during peak traffic hours. Despite this, the truck crashed into multiple vehicles in the outer lane, including several luxury cars such as BMWs and Mercedes.
According to authorities, the truck experienced a sudden brake failure, which caused the driver to lose control. At least one woman died, and 19 others sustained serious injuries in the crash. All injured individuals were rushed to a private hospital in Navi Mumbai for treatment.
“The container trailer rammed into at least 20 vehicles due to brake failure. A woman succumbed to her injuries during treatment, while others are recovering,” an official told PTI.
Following the crash, the Khopoli Police took the truck driver into custody. A medical test confirmed that he was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway.
The massive collision caused a 5-kilometre-long traffic jam on the expressway, one of the busiest in the country, which sees nearly 1.5 to 2 lakh vehicles daily. Authorities are now reviewing road safety measures and mechanical inspection protocols for heavy vehicles to prevent such tragedies in the future.
