Pune, July 31, 2025: After a five-year delay caused by space constraints and technical objections, the transport department has approved the construction of an Automated Driving Testing Track (ADTT) at Phulenagar, Alandi Road, Pune. The project aims to ease and modernise the licence testing process, particularly for two-wheeler applicants.

According to officials from the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO), the automated track will be developed by a private agency selected through a tendering process initiated by the local Sub-Regional Transport Office. The track will replicate the model used at the Institute of Driving Training and Research (IDTR) in Bhosari and is expected to be completed within a year.

The tendering process for the automated test track at Alandi Road is complete. The new facility will use advanced technology similar to the IDTR model and will improve the efficiency and transparency of the testing process.

Currently, four-wheeler tests are conducted at IDTR, Bhosari, while two-wheeler tests are held at the basic track at Phulenagar. The new ADTT will specifically cater to two-wheelers and aims to reduce manual involvement by incorporating sensor-based performance evaluations.

Earlier proposals for two-wheeler automation at the Alandi site were rejected due to technical issues and space limitations. However, following a reassessment of the available land and a surge in licence applications, the transport department approved the project.

Bhosale added, “While the automated system ensures fair testing by eliminating human bias, it also leads to a higher failure rate due to its precision. Applicants need to be more prepared, as even small errors are detected by the sensors.”

The department had also proposed additional ADTTs in Hadapsar and Dive Ghat near Saswad, but only the Alandi Road location has been cleared so far.
