Residents mock civic officials for “caring for the dead” after gym equipment was installed at Hindu cemetery

A bizarre and widely-discussed protest took place at the Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC) office on Thursday, where residents dressed as ghosts to express outrage over the installation of swings and gym equipment inside the Benapatti Hindu crematorium.

Draped in white sheets and wearing ghostly makeup, protestors marched to the Ward Committee office carrying flowers, which they mockingly offered to civic officials while sarcastically thanking them for “taking care of the dead.” The unusual demonstration, captured on video, has since gone viral and sparked widespread debate across Maharashtra.

The protest was triggered by the VVMC’s controversial decision to install recreational equipment such as swings, hammocks, and exercise bars in a Hindu cremation ground. Residents were furious, calling the move disrespectful and inappropriate for a sacred space meant for mourning and remembrance.

“What kind of planning allows a gym in a cemetery?” questioned one of the protesters, who pointed out that there was already an open ground nearby more suited for such activities. Many viewed the installations as an insult to the departed and to cultural traditions surrounding cremation grounds.

Although the municipal administration removed the equipment a few days ago, the protest went ahead as a symbolic act to highlight the authorities’ poor judgment and lack of sensitivity. The footage circulating online was filmed before the removal and documents the growing frustration among locals.
