The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is gearing up to revolutionize digital identity management with a new e-Aadhaar mobile app, expected to launch by the end of 2025. This upcoming app will introduce a QR code-based verification system that aims to make Aadhaar authentication fully digital, secure, and paperless.

What’s New in the e-Aadhaar App?

According to UIDAI CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar, around 2,000 of the existing one lakh Aadhaar authentication devices across the country have already been upgraded to support QR-based scanning. With this new system, users will no longer need to carry physical photocopies of their Aadhaar cards. Instead, identity verification will be done instantly through a QR code scan.

The revamped e-Aadhaar mobile app will also allow users to update key personal information—such as name, address, and date of birth—directly from their smartphones. This means fewer visits to Aadhaar enrolment centres for everyday updates, making the process faster and more accessible.

Digital Rollout & Verification Process

Starting November 2025, only biometric updates (like fingerprint and iris scans) will require physical visits to enrolment centres. All other personal data changes can be handled entirely through the app, using digital verification tools.

The app will draw authenticated data directly from official government databases such as:

  • PAN cards
  • Passports
  • Birth certificates
  • Driving licences
  • Ration cards under PDS
  • MNREGA job card records
  • Electricity bill records (for address confirmation)

Focus on Security and Privacy

UIDAI assures that the system has been designed with strict privacy safeguards. Personal data will only be accessed or shared with the user’s explicit consent. The QR code verification process is already being piloted in select sub-registrar offices and hotels, where it has proven to be a secure and efficient tool for identity checks.

Special Drive for Children’s Biometric Updates

UIDAI is also collaborating with educational boards like CBSE to carry out biometric enrolment drives in schools. These initiatives target mandatory biometric updates for children aged 5–7 and again at 15–17 years, ensuring Aadhaar data stays up-to-date as they grow.

With over a billion Aadhaar holders across India, UIDAI’s new app and QR-based digital identity system promise to make Aadhaar usage smarter, safer, and far more convenient than ever before.
