Pune, August 5, 2025: NCP MP Supriya Sule has formally demanded the establishment of a High Court bench in Pune, citing the city’s growing population, infrastructure, and the increasing number of pending cases. In a letter addressed to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, she emphasized the need for decentralization of justice and accessible legal processes for citizens residing far from Mumbai.

Sule pointed out that many areas in Pune district, such as villages in Indapur taluka, are located around 300 to 350 kilometers from Mumbai. Given this distance, a Pune bench of the Bombay High Court is just as essential as the recently approved Kolhapur bench, she argued.

The demand for a Pune bench has been ongoing for several years. With the Kolhapur bench getting approval, the movement for Pune has gained fresh momentum. Sule’s intervention has added significant political weight to the campaign, with many hoping it will prompt the state government to act decisively.

In her letter, Sule welcomed the Kolhapur bench and simultaneously presented detailed justifications for establishing a bench in Pune. She highlighted that litigants, lawyers, and witnesses from remote areas like Nira-Narsingpur face financial, physical, and mental hardships traveling long distances to Mumbai. This, she stated, violates the principle of “Justice delayed is justice denied.”

Sule noted that Pune district now has a population exceeding one crore. As the administrative headquarters of the Pune division, the city houses almost all key government offices and courts. Pune currently has 82 district judges, 82 senior-level judges, 95 junior-level judges/magistrates, eight family courts, and several special courts including consumer, green, cooperative, and labor courts. She emphasized that the legal community in Pune, with around 25,000 active lawyers, offers a strong human resource base for a High Court bench.

Additionally, Pune has over 60 law colleges with thousands of law students, and it serves as a major IT and industrial hub. The volume of commercial, labor, and institutional litigation is significantly high. Given Pune’s infrastructure, legal ecosystem, transport, and connectivity, it is a natural and ideal location for a High Court bench.

MP Supriya Sule concluded her letter by stating that establishing a bench in Pune is a just, practical, and people-centric move. She urged the state government to begin the necessary process for setting up the Pune bench of the Bombay High Court.
