Pune, August 11, 2025: The Pune Zilla Parishad (ZP) is introducing an online attendance system for teachers across district schools using geo-fencing technology. The move aims to improve punctuality, reduce absenteeism, and bring greater transparency and discipline to the education system.

Under the new system, teachers will be able to mark their attendance through a mobile application only when they are physically present within the GPS-defined boundaries of their respective schools. The app will automatically record their entry and exit times, ensuring accurate location-based verification.

Pune ZP CEO Gajanan Patil confirmed that the system will be implemented in all district schools this month. “The biometric option was proving expensive, so this alternative was chosen. The centralised dashboard will help monitor attendance in real time, preventing any manual alterations,” he said.

The initiative comes after surprise inspections in recent months revealed cases where students were present but teachers were absent or arrived late. While teachers’ unions initially opposed the idea, discussions with the administration have addressed their concerns. The new attendance protocol will also apply to staff at primary health centres.
