Weather Update: IMD Issues Orange Alert For Pune And Adjoining Districts
Pune, August 16, 2025: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has upgraded its rainfall forecast for Maharashtra, warning of extremely heavy rainfall over parts of Madhya Maharashtra on August 17-18. The low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal continues to influence weather patterns across the state.
Pune city is expected to experience light to moderate showers beginning August 16. The IMD has also issued an orange alert for Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra till August 18, predicting extremely heavy rainfall in isolated parts of Konkan and Goa on August 17, and in Madhya Maharashtra between August 17-18. Additionally, the heavy rainfall warning for ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra has been extended until August 20.
According to officials, the low-pressure system over the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal and coastal Odisha-Andhra Pradesh region remains active. “The associated upper-air cyclonic circulation extends up to 7.6 km above mean sea level, tilting southwards with height. It is expected to move west-northwestwards across south Odisha and north coastal Andhra over the next 24 hours. This system will significantly impact upcoming rainfall spells,” the IMD stated.
Meanwhile, the drought-prone Marathwada region is set to receive widespread rainfall on August 15 and 18, offering relief for agricultural operations. Konkan and Goa are also forecast to witness isolated heavy rain on August 15 and 20, along with very heavy rainfall spells between August 16-19.
