Pune, August 21, 2025: In a landmark decision, the Maharashtra Revenue Department has approved the renaming of Velhe Taluka in Pune district to Rajgad Taluka, honouring the historical significance of the region. The decision follows overwhelming support from local governing bodies, with 58 out of 70 Gram Panchayats and the Pune Zilla Parishad passing resolutions in favour of the name change.

An official notification regarding the renaming will soon be published in the state gazette, officials confirmed. The move has been welcomed by residents, who believe it appropriately recognises the historical and cultural value of Rajgad Fort, the first capital of the Maratha Empire established by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

Rajgad Fort holds immense significance in Maratha history, serving as a strategic centre during the early years of the empire. Locals believe that naming the taluka after the fort will enhance the area’s identity and boost tourism by highlighting its heritage value.

State officials have stated that while some administrative updates will be required to reflect the new name, the change is primarily aimed at honouring the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the region’s historical roots.

The Central Government has also given its consent to the name change, making it officially recognised at both state and national levels. Once the gazette notification is issued, Velhe Taluka will be formally known as Rajgad Taluka.

Residents and heritage enthusiasts have welcomed the move, expressing hope that it will bring renewed attention to the fort and contribute to preserving its rich historical legacy.
