Pune: Maharashtra State Health Dept Issues Notice To Sahyadri Hospital After Couple Dies Post Liver Transplant
Pune, August 23, 2025: In a heartbreaking incident, a couple from Pune lost their lives following a liver transplant procedure at Sahyadri Hospital, Deccan. The deceased have been identified as Bapu Balkrishna Komkar and his wife Kamini Bapu Komkar.
Bapu Komkar, who was suffering from end-stage liver disease, urgently needed a transplant. In a remarkable act of sacrifice, his wife Kamini decided to donate a part of her liver in an attempt to save his life. The surgery was conducted last Wednesday. However, despite intensive medical efforts, both husband and wife tragically passed away.
According to the hospital, Bapu developed cardiogenic shock after the surgery and could not be revived. Kamini initially showed signs of recovery but later developed sudden hypotensive shock with multi-organ dysfunction on the sixth postoperative day, which proved fatal.
In an official statement, Sahyadri Hospitals expressed deep grief: “We deeply empathize with the Patients’ family in this time of immense loss. Liver transplant is one of the most complex procedures and in this case the recipient was a high-risk patient with end stage liver disease. As per the protocol, the family was fully counselled about the risks in advance. The surgeries were carried out following standard medical protocols. Unfortunately, the recipient developed cardiogenic shock after the transplant and could not be revived despite all efforts. The donor initially recovered well, but later on the 6th postoperative day, developed sudden Hypotensive shock with subsequent multi organ dysfunction which could not be controlled even with advanced treatment. We remain committed to providing the highest standards of care and extend our deepest empathy to the bereaved family during this tragic time..”
The double tragedy has left the Komkar family and their community devastated. Neighbours and relatives have expressed shock and sorrow, especially as Kamini’s selfless sacrifice to save her husband ended in the loss of both lives.
