From Pune To Berlin: Shivajiraje Mardani Akhara Brings Tradition Abroad On Ganesh Visarjan Procession
Berlin, Germany – Tradition met global admiration when the international branch of Shri Shivajiraje Mardani Akhara brought an extraordinary performance to the Ganesh Visarjan festivities in Berlin. The event featured Ranaragini and Mavla performers in traditional attire, showcasing a powerful display of India’s ancient masculine sports. The vibrant spectacle captivated onlookers and offered a glimpse into a centuries-old martial heritage.
The initiative was led by Latoya Wilde, who trained extensively in Pune over the past year before establishing a branch in Germany. By teaching local enthusiasts, she not only introduced them to the techniques of this martial art but also emphasized its deep cultural roots and spiritual significance.
This performance marked a milestone as the first international display of men’s sports under the Ganesh Visarjan celebrations. It was more than just a show of skill—it was a cultural bridge connecting India’s martial legacy with a global audience.
The international effort received strong guidance from Pandit Anna Powar, founder of the Anandrao Powar Prachin Yuddha Kala Prashikshan Sanstha in Kolhapur, and Vijay Aivale-Patil, chief trainer of Shri Shivajiraje Mardani Akhara, Chhatrapati Shivajinagar Gavthan, Pune. Their mentorship ensured the authenticity and traditional discipline of the art form.
For many spectators in Berlin, the event was not just a festive procession but a cultural revelation. It highlighted how Indian martial arts, once confined to local akhadas, are now finding resonance and respect across continents.
