Pune, September 11, 2025: Struggling to manage civic services and citizen complaints after the merger of 34 villages, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is planning to increase the number of regional ward offices and initiate fresh recruitment to improve efficiency.

Currently, PMC operates 15 regional ward offices, each covering vast areas compared to other municipal corporations in the state. This has resulted in delays in addressing local complaints, particularly regarding roads, drainage, and infrastructure.

On Tuesday, municipal commissioner Naval Kishore Ram and additional municipal commissioner B P Prithviraj held a review meeting with department heads and ward officers. Ram acknowledged that PMC, now the largest corporation in terms of geographical area, has been unable to adequately serve citizens due to insufficient budgets and an over-centralised system. He urged that more funds be allocated at the ward level to ensure timely response to local issues.

Prithviraj confirmed that PMC will soon submit a proposal to the state government for setting up more ward offices and fresh recruitments. He added that responsibilities like road repairs, drainage, and stormwater management should be decentralised and directly handled by ward offices, making them the first point of contact for citizens’ grievances.
