IMD Issues Heavy Rainfall Warning for 20 States and UTs on September 17
Widespread thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds expected
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy to very heavy rainfall warning for at least 20 states and Union Territories on Wednesday, September 17. According to the IMD’s latest forecast, the affected regions include Maharashtra, West Bengal, Sikkim, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Goa, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Telangana.
The IMD bulletin noted that rainfall activity will be accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds across several regions. Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Uttarakhand, East Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands between September 16 and 19. Similar conditions are likely over Vidarbha, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and parts of the Northeast.

In Telangana, heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated places in Vikarabad, Sangareddy, Medak, and Kamareddy districts. The IMD has further warned that thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds are expected across all 33 districts of the state.
For Hyderabad and surrounding areas, the IMD has predicted a generally cloudy sky over the next 24 hours. Light to moderate rain or thundershowers, accompanied by gusty winds, are very likely towards evening or night. Mist and hazy conditions are also expected during morning and night hours. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover around 30°C and 22°C, respectively.

Strong surface winds reaching 30–40 kmph are forecast along Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema during the next five days. Meanwhile, heavy rains are also expected over Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Coastal and South Interior Karnataka, and Konkan-Goa regions until September 19.

The IMD has advised local authorities and residents in the affected states to remain alert and take necessary precautions as rainfall may disrupt normal life, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas.
