Pune Metro Line 1: Work on Swargate–Katraj underground extension set to begin

Maha-Metro to issue work order for Swargate–Katraj underground stretch next month
Pune, Sep 21 – The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) will issue a work order for the Swargate–Katraj underground metro extension next month, paving the way for construction to begin by the end of the year.
The 5.46 km corridor, part of Phase II of the Pune Metro expansion, will run entirely underground and ease congestion on the busy Satara Road while improving north–south connectivity. The extension will link Swargate with Katraj, covering several dense residential areas along the way.
Bids for the project were opened on September 20, with ITD Cementation Ltd emerging as the lowest bidder at ₹1,643.88 crore. Other contenders included J Kumar Infraprojects (₹1,738 crore), Larsen & Toubro (₹1,747 crore), Tata Projects Ltd (₹1,824 crore), Afcons Infrastructure–Sam India JV (₹1,890.81 crore), and HCC–Kalpataru JV (₹1,999 crore). Officials said the contract is likely to be awarded within 10 days. “The selected company will start work by next month,” confirmed, Maha-Metro.
The project involves construction of two underground tunnels with four tunnel boring machines (TBMs) and five stations at Market Yard, Padmavati, Katraj, Bibwewadi, and Balaji Nagar. The original tender, floated in January 2025, only covered Market Yard, Padmavati, and Katraj. Following intervention by guardian minister Ajit Pawar, Bibwewadi and Balaji Nagar stations were added in the revised tender issued on April 11.
Once complete, the extension will reduce travel time between Swargate and Katraj from around 45 minutes to less than 15 minutes, offering faster and more reliable access across southern Pune.
