Company explains durability, design upgrades, and real-world performance

Apple has moved to clarify concerns surrounding the iPhone 17 Pro after reports of visible marks on demo units sparked talk of a potential “scratchgate.” The company confirmed that most of the marks seen in stores are not scratches but residue caused by worn MagSafe stands used on display. According to Apple, these can be cleaned off easily, and the same issue has been observed in older iPhone models. Stores are now replacing the problematic stands.

Durability expert JerryRigEverything noted that the edges of the iPhone 17 Pro’s camera plateau appear more prone to scratches. Apple responded by explaining that these edges are made from anodised aluminium—the same material used in other iPhones and MacBooks—which is strong but can show normal wear over time.

Despite the online debate, Apple highlighted the durability advances of the iPhone 17 lineup. The new Ceramic Shield 2 front cover is more resistant to scratches than ever, and the ultra-thin iPhone Air has impressed with its strength in bend and scratch tests. For the iPhone 17 Pro specifically, outside of the camera bump edges, everyday scratch resistance remains excellent.

Apple also emphasised the real benefits of its material shift from titanium to aerospace-grade 7000-series aluminium alloy. The new frame not only makes the device lighter but also delivers better thermal management, improved battery efficiency, and a seamless unibody design that feels premium.

Early reviews back up these claims, with users reporting that even after two weeks of heavy and casual use, both the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max continue to look brand new—offering reassurance that the latest iPhones are built to last.
