Maharashtra Govt Eases Tenant Registration With ‘One District, One Office’ Rule
Pune, September 30, 2025: In a significant reform to streamline property-related services, the Maharashtra state property registration department has announced that tenant agreements can now be processed at any sub-registrar office within a district. This change, part of the One District, One Registration scheme, will come into effect from October 2.
Until now, citizens were restricted to sub-registrar offices assigned to their locality, often leading to long delays as some offices were overloaded while others remained underutilised. Though clearance was mandated within 24 hours, many citizens reported waiting weeks for document approval.
Officials said the new system will evenly distribute applications, reduce pendency, and ensure faster processing across all 519 sub-registrar offices in the state. The model was piloted in Pune last year and received encouraging results.
As part of the reform, more police stations have also been integrated into the online verification process to synchronize tenant registration with mandatory checks.
Meanwhile, in a parallel initiative, the government has launched e-Pramaan in Satara on a pilot basis from September 17. The service allows citizens to access digitally signed copies of property documents dating back to 1985 directly from their devices. Officials confirmed that these digital copies hold the same legal validity as physical documents under the IT Act, 2000.
Authorities said the move will save citizens time, reduce paperwork, enhance transparency, and strengthen security with digital signatures. If successful, e-Pramaan will gradually be expanded across Maharashtra.
