Kitchen tips: Experts suggest simple home remedies to clean cauliflower and keep it safe for storage

Cauliflower, a popular winter vegetable, often poses a challenge in the kitchen due to hidden worms and insects lodged deep inside its florets. While leafy vegetables like spinach reveal surface pests easily, compact vegetables such as cabbage and cauliflower tend to conceal them, making cleaning a tedious task.

Food safety experts and homemakers suggest several quick methods to ensure cauliflower is clean before cooking or storing:

Soaking in water: Place the whole cauliflower head in a large vessel filled with water, ensuring it is fully submerged. To prevent it from floating, a heavy object can be placed on top. After soaking for 15–20 minutes, the worms and larvae lodged inside begin to float out.

Using warm water: Soaking the vegetable in lukewarm water enhances the process, helping remove insects more effectively.

Tamarind water wash: Preparing a solution of tamarind water and soaking the cauliflower for a while not only removes dirt and worms but also helps reduce traces of harmful pesticides and chemicals used during farming.

Pre-cooking step: Before cooking, it is advisable to cut the cauliflower into florets and briefly boil them in hot water. This ensures that any remaining worms or microbes are eliminated.

Storage precautions: Experts warn against directly refrigerating market-bought cauliflower without cleaning. Unwashed produce can spread worms and bacteria to other food items stored in the fridge. It is recommended to clean and dry the vegetable thoroughly before refrigeration.

These simple cleaning methods not only make cauliflower safe for cooking but also help extend its shelf life in the refrigerator.
