State-run telecom’s new feature allows users to make voice calls over Wi-Fi; service launched in South and West Zones

In a major development for telecom users, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has announced the launch of its Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) service, allowing customers to make voice calls even without a mobile network by connecting to a Wi-Fi or broadband network.

The VoWiFi service, which was soft-launched on October 2 by Neeraj Mittal, Secretary of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), is currently available in South and West Zones and will be expanded nationwide in the coming months. The service is free for all BSNL users.

With this launch, BSNL joins the ranks of private telecom giants like Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone-Idea (Vi), who already offer Wi-Fi calling services. The move marks another step in BSNL’s digital transformation and aims to improve connectivity in low-network areas, such as basements, rural regions, and remote towns.

The announcement coincides with BSNL’s 25th anniversary, making it a milestone moment for the state-owned telecom operator. The company has also been rapidly expanding its 4G infrastructure, having installed over 100,000 mobile towers across the country, with plans to add nearly 97,500 more in the near future.

Recently, BSNL also rolled out 4G and eSIM services in Mumbai, following their earlier launch in Tamil Nadu, as part of its broader effort to modernize services and strengthen its position in India’s competitive telecom market.

With VoWiFi now active, BSNL users can look forward to clearer calls and uninterrupted connectivity, even in places where traditional mobile signals fail.
