Money Sent to the Wrong UPI or Bank Account? Don’t Panic — Here’s How to Get It Back
Timely reporting and correct documentation can help recover your money safely
With the rise of digital transactions, mistakes such as sending money to the wrong bank account or UPI ID have become increasingly common. While such errors can be stressful, acting quickly and following the right steps can significantly improve your chances of getting your money back.

If you’ve transferred funds to the wrong bank account, the first step is to contact your bank’s customer service immediately. Provide details such as the transaction ID, amount, and recipient information. The bank will then investigate the issue and initiate a reversal request with the receiving bank. Keep screenshots and bank statements handy to speed up the process. Reporting the issue at the earliest is crucial, as delays may complicate the recovery.
In cases where money is sent to the wrong UPI ID, raise a complaint through your UPI app (such as Google Pay, PhonePe, or Paytm). You should also reach out to the app’s customer support team and provide the full transaction details. If your concern isn’t resolved promptly, you can escalate the issue to the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which oversees UPI transactions.
For further assistance, you can contact NPCI’s toll-free helpline at 1800-120-1740 or email [email protected]. If the issue remains unresolved after 30 days, you can formally file a complaint through these channels.

In all cases, acting fast and keeping detailed records of your transaction is key. Quick response and proper documentation can often mean the difference between losing and successfully recovering your money.
