Maharashtra Weather Update: Rain Likely During Diwali Festivities; IMD Issues Thunderstorm Alert For Several Districts
Maharashtra, October 14, 2025 — The festive glow of Diwali may be accompanied by rainfall this year, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast moderate to heavy showers across several parts of the state between October 15 and 20. The unseasonal rain, which began in May and continued through the Navratri season, is expected to extend into the Diwali celebrations as well.
According to the IMD, districts in Vidarbha, Marathwada, and Central Maharashtra are likely to experience thunderstorms and gusty winds between October 15 and 18. These dates coincide with key festive days — Vasubaras on October 17, Dhantrayodashi on October 18, and Narak Chaturdashi on October 20 — raising the possibility of cloudy skies and rainfall during traditional celebrations.
The department has issued a yellow alert for several districts, including Pune, Ahmednagar, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Satara, Beed, and Sindhudurg, warning of thunder and lightning activity accompanied by moderate rainfall.
In Mumbai and Pune, weather experts predict a mix of light rain and cloudy conditions, which may coincide with fireworks and festive gatherings. Residents have been advised to stay alert and plan outdoor celebrations accordingly.
Meanwhile, the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon is progressing steadily. The system has already retreated from Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, and Goa. Meteorologists expect it to fully withdraw from the remaining parts of India, including Karnataka, Telangana, and the northeastern states, within the next three days.
If forecasts hold true, Maharashtra may witness a rare Diwali where the sound of fireworks blends with the rumble of thunder — marking yet another year of unseasonal festive rainfall.
