Pune Woman Dies After Rock Smashes Through Car Sunroof At Tamhini Ghat
Pune, October 31, 2025: A 43-year-old woman from Pune, identified as Snehal Gujrathi, lost her life in a tragic accident on Thursday morning when a rock crashed through the sunroof of her car at Tamhini Ghat near Kondithar village in Raigad district.
According to police reports, Snehal was travelling with her husband, son, and mother-in-law from Pune to Mangaon in a Volkswagen Virtus when the incident occurred between 9:30 am and 10 am. She was seated in the front passenger seat while her husband drove. The other two family members escaped unhurt.
Mangaon police inspector Nivrutti Borhade stated that a rock weighing around two kilograms fell directly onto the car’s closed sunroof, followed by two smaller rocks. The impact caused severe head injuries to Snehal, leading to heavy bleeding. Despite her husband rushing her to a nearby hospital located about seven kilometres away, she succumbed to her injuries during treatment.
Authorities have registered a case of accidental death. Raigad superintendent of police Anchal Dalal confirmed that a detailed inquiry has been initiated to ascertain if the accident resulted from loose rocks or a minor landslide.
Tamhini Ghat, connecting Pune to the Konkan region, is a scenic but treacherous route prone to landslides and rockfalls, especially during and after the monsoon. Following the incident, the Raigad district collector has ordered an immediate safety audit and instructed officials to identify vulnerable areas. Motorists have been advised to exercise caution and avoid non-essential travel through the ghat.
Police have also issued a warning against opening car sunroofs while driving through hilly terrain. “Even a closed sunroof may not withstand the impact of falling rocks. Travellers should keep them shut and remain vigilant in such areas,” an officer cautioned.
