Pune Traders Raise Alarm Over Rise in Thefts by Women at Tulshibaug Market; Seek Police Help
Pune, October 31, 2025: Traders from the city’s popular Tulsi Baug market have raised serious concerns over a growing number of thefts, many allegedly carried out by women, during weekends when the market sees heavy footfall. The issue was discussed during a meeting between the Pune City Police and representatives from various traders’ and hawkers’ associations, held at the Fergusson College Amphitheatre on Wednesday.
According to a police press release, patrolling by women police personnel in the Tulshibaug area will be increased to curb such incidents. Around 45 representatives from different sectors—including grocery, jewellery, timber, and hawkers—attended the meeting, which was chaired by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 1) Krushikesh Rawale.
During the discussion, traders highlighted instances of miscreants cutting CCTV and loudspeaker wires in the market to evade surveillance. Responding to this, police officials from the Faraskhana and Vishrambag stations were directed to study the situation and propose preventive measures.
The meeting also covered other key concerns such as traffic congestion, illegal parking, and safety issues affecting business owners. The police assured action against unauthorised hawkers on the FC Road footpath and advised traders to verify staff credentials and ensure CCTV cameras cover surrounding roadside areas.
Jewellers were specifically asked to inform the police while transporting gold and to request police security during such movements. To address parking and traffic issues, the police proposed deploying home guards for assistance in market areas—costs of which would be borne by traders.
Additionally, the authorities announced strict measures against illegal parking on Z Bridge and unauthorised auto-rickshaw stands near markets. With restrictions on the entry of heavy vehicles into the city, traders have been advised to use smaller vehicles for transporting goods.
Police officials from Khadak, Samarth, Faraskhana, Vishrambag, Shivajinagar, and Deccan stations were also present at the meeting.
