Pune PMC To Survey Large Societies on Wet Waste Management Amid Concerns Over Non-Compliance
Pune, November 22, 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced plans to conduct a detailed survey of large housing societies and commercial establishments in the city to gather information on wet waste management.
Currently, there are around 2,000 establishments in the city, expected to generate over 20 tons of waste daily. However, reports indicate that proper disposal is not being carried out.
According to PMC’s Additional Commissioner Pavneet Kaur, around 400–500 small projects that process wet waste in these societies may be non-operational. Societies producing more than 100 kilograms of waste daily are required to dispose of it on-site. She instructed officials to inspect these societies and submit detailed reports on the status of these projects.
Kaur recently held an online meeting with solid waste department officers and health inspectors from ward offices, emphasizing the need for stricter monitoring of wet waste management. She pointed out that under the 2000 building regulations, establishments generating over 100 kg of wet waste daily must process it on-site.
The PMC noted that while approximately 2,000 projects exist for processing wet waste, many remain closed, and some are not processing waste as per rules. Additionally, instances of mixed waste being dumped under the guise of wet waste for agricultural purposes were reported last week. The PMC has initiated investigations into such cases.
Kaur added that 17 private organizations in the city assist establishments in implementing waste management projects, providing guidance where necessary. The survey of all wet waste processing projects, including closed units, will be completed within a week, after which detailed findings will be shared.
