Pune Siblings Found Dead In Farm Pond Hours After Being Reported Missing
The children, aged 10 and 7, disappeared while playing near their home in Junnar; police say the deaths were accidental.
A heartbreaking incident from Junnar in Pune district has left the local community in deep shock, after two young siblings who went missing on Saturday afternoon were discovered dead in a nearby farm pond later that night.
According to the police, the children Afan Inamdar, aged 10, and his younger sister Rifat, aged 7, had stepped out to play near their home in the Islampura area around 4 pm. When they failed to return, their worried mother began searching for them and alerted neighbours. By early evening, the family registered a missing persons complaint at the Junnar police station.
Because the region had recently reported leopard sightings, the Forest Department joined the search alongside police teams and local villagers. Drones were deployed to scan the surrounding fields and water bodies as the hours passed.
Sub-divisional police officer Dhananjay Patil said the first breakthrough came when search teams spotted a pair of children’s slippers near the edge of a farm pond. At around 9.30 pm, the bodies of both siblings were found floating in the water. They were rushed to Junnar Rural Hospital, where doctors confirmed that the children had died several hours earlier due to drowning.
The news spread rapidly through the village, triggering grief and disbelief. Officers said there is no indication of foul play, and preliminary findings suggest that the children may have slipped into the pond while playing near its edge. The family is already coping with hardship, as the children’s father has been working in Dubai for the past five months, leaving their mother and grandmother as primary caregivers.
Police said the investigation will continue, but all evidence so far points to a tragic accident.
