Beware: Chips, Cold Drinks, Ice Cream, Pastries and Biscuits Linked to Serious Health Risks, Says New Lancet Study
A new study published in The Lancet has raised serious concerns about the rising consumption of ultra-processed foods in India. Popular items like chips, cold drinks, ice creams, pastries and biscuits have become everyday snacks for many households, but the report warns that these very foods are contributing to a sharp rise in lifestyle-related diseases.
Researchers found that regular intake of ultra-processed foods increases the risk of heart disease, type-2 diabetes, kidney disorders, depression and even premature death. These products are often packed with excessive sugar, salt, unhealthy fats and chemical additives that disrupt metabolic functions over time.
Experts say that India’s fast-changing food habits, busy schedules and widespread marketing of packaged snacks have made young people more dependent on quick and tasty food options that carry hidden long-term dangers. Health professionals also note a growing link between UPF consumption and early-age obesity and diabetes.
The study recommends stronger food labeling laws, restrictions on misleading advertising and large-scale awareness drives. It also urges people to choose traditional home-cooked meals, fruits and minimally processed foods to safeguard their health.
The findings serve as a strong warning that convenience often comes with consequences, and mindful eating is essential to prevent future health risks.
