Pune: Wakad Residents Launch Indefinite Dharna Against PMRDA, Allege "Conspiracy" To Sell Public Land
Pune, December 1, 2025: Residents of Prabhag 26 (Wakad and Kaspate Vasti area) have launched an indefinite dharna (sit-in protest) against the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), alleging a systematic effort to hand over a crucial 13-acre public plot to a private developer for commercial use. The protest comes after years of failed appeals to reserve the land for public amenities.
The land in question, Survey No. 208-209 at Kalewadi Phata in Peth No. 38-39, is considered the last major open space in the densely populated area. Residents, led by former BJP corporator Sandip Arun Kaspate, have been pursuing the matter since 2014. They have consistently demanded that the plot be reserved for a public garden, a children’s playground, and an activity centre for senior citizens, essential facilities for the rapidly growing neighbourhood.
“For years, we have submitted written applications to every concerned department, officer, and the PMRDA administration, requesting that this land be reserved for the welfare of Prabhag 26’s citizens,” stated Sandip Kaspate. “In light of the rising population, this area desperately needs green space, play areas for children, and a peaceful recreational spot for the elderly.”
However, protesters allege that despite their persistent efforts, the PMRDA administration has disregarded public demand and is now attempting a “backdoor allotment” of the land for a commercial project.
“This decision, which tramples on citizens’ rights and is detrimental to the sustainable development of the ward, is unacceptable under any circumstances,” Kaspate declared. “To stop this attempt at commercializing public interest space and to protect the rights of the ward’s citizens, we have decided to launch an indefinite dharna in protest against the PMRDA.”
The agitation underscores a growing conflict over urban green spaces in expanding metropolitan regions. Protesters argue that the land is vital for improving the quality of life, developing green lungs, and creating a better environment for future generations.
“Our firm stance is that this land should not be given for any commercial use but should be permanently reserved for public use only,” Kaspate asserted. “This agitation will continue until our demand is met and citizens receive their rightful plot.”
The protest remains peaceful but is gaining intensity, with more residents joining the cause each day. The community now awaits an official response from the PMRDA administration.
