Messi Tour Controversy Escalates: Sourav Ganguly Slaps Rs.50 Crore Notice on Argentina Fan Club Head
Former Indian cricket captain and ex-president of the Bengal Cricket Association (BCA), Sourav Ganguly, has filed a ₹50 crore defamation lawsuit, alleging that his reputation was deliberately damaged through false and malicious accusations linked to an incident at Kolkata’s Salt Lake (Yuva Bharati) Stadium.
According to reports, Ganguly has lodged a formal complaint at Lalbazar police station in Kolkata against Uttam Saha, president of the Argentina Fan Club. Ganguly has accused Saha of intentionally implicating him in the controversy that erupted during a football-related event associated with global icon Lionel Messi.
Allegations of False and Malicious Claims
In his complaint, Ganguly stated that Uttam Saha repeatedly made baseless, defamatory and hateful statements, falsely linking him to the mismanagement and chaos that occurred at the stadium. Ganguly alleged that these claims were made with deliberate intent, causing serious harm to his public image and personal reputation.
Ganguly further asserted that the accusations lacked any factual basis and resulted in public character assassination, affecting both his credibility and standing.
Legal Notice Sent, Defamation Suit Filed
As part of the legal action, Ganguly has issued a legal notice to Saha and proceeded with a ₹50 crore damages claim, seeking accountability for the alleged reputational harm. The notice reportedly states that the allegations are entirely unsubstantiated and were made to malign him.
Ganguly Clarifies His Role
On the day of the incident, Sourav Ganguly was present at the Salt Lake Stadium but left the venue after chaos broke out. He clarified that he had attended the event solely as a guest and had no involvement whatsoever in organising or managing the Lionel Messi-related programme.
Purpose of the Legal Action
Ganguly’s legal representatives said the lawsuit was filed to protect his public reputation and to act as a deterrent against the spread of false allegations in the future. They emphasised that the accusations made by Uttam Saha have had a significant negative impact on Ganguly’s image, prompting the need for legal recourse.
The matter is now expected to proceed through legal channels, with further developments awaited.
