Pune, December 29, 2025: In a major push to meet rising passenger demand and ease congestion, the Central Railway has unveiled an ambitious plan to expand coaching terminals in Pune as part of a nationwide capacity enhancement programme. Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw said the initiative aims to significantly upgrade railway infrastructure and improve connectivity across the country.

With sustained growth in rail travel, the Railways plans to double the originating train capacity of major cities over the next five years. A comprehensive plan covering 48 key cities is under consideration, including Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur under the Central Railway zone. The expansion will cater to both suburban and non-suburban traffic, keeping their distinct operational needs in view.

At present, the Pune Division handles around 50 originating trains daily. Once the proposed upgrades are completed, the capacity is expected to increase by an additional 60 trains per day, along with the augmentation of 198 coaches across 73 existing services.

For Pune, nearby stations such as Hadapsar, Khadki and Alandi have been identified for capacity enhancement to ensure balanced operations. Works include adding platforms, stabling and pit lines, creating new coaching terminals, upgrading signalling systems, and increasing sectional capacity through multi-tracking.

Key projects underway or planned include the extension of platforms and addition of six new platforms at Pune Junction, full-length platform extensions at Hadapsar, platform upgrades at Khadki, and the development of Alandi as a new coaching terminal with multiple platforms, pit lines and stabling facilities. Major projects such as the Uruli Mega Terminus and improved connectivity between Pune and Sasvad Road are also part of the roadmap.

Railway officials said capacity will be increased progressively, with immediate, short-term and long-term actions clearly defined, ensuring that passengers begin benefiting from the upgrades over the next five years, well ahead of the 2030 target.
