Foreigner Records Man Dumping Trash Into Sea at Gateway of India, Internet Reacts Strongly
Social media conversations around cleanliness and public responsibility have once again intensified after a shocking incident from Mumbai surfaced online. A viral video filmed by a foreign traveller has sparked widespread criticism after it showed a man throwing a bag of garbage directly into the Arabian Sea near the Gateway of India, one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.
The video was recorded by a foreign tourist who was vlogging his visit. In the clip, the man is seen arriving at the waterfront in a vehicle, stepping out with a bag of waste, and casually dumping it into the sea. What angered viewers even more was the fact that he was accompanied by his young daughter during the act. The foreigner, clearly disturbed by what he witnessed, questioned the man on camera but received no response. As the video ended, the tourist expressed his disappointment and was heard saying, “That’s not good.”
Strong Outrage Across Social Media Platforms
The video quickly went viral and reignited discussions around civic sense, accountability, and enforcement of waste management laws in India’s financial capital. Many users expressed embarrassment that such behaviour occurred at a globally recognised tourist spot and in front of a foreign visitor. Several questioned why authorities failed to intervene and urged the Maharashtra government to take strict action against the offender.
One user wrote, “Find him and fine him heavily, not just few hundred bugs. Fine him in multiple thousands.”
Another user wrote on X, “Time for Blacklisting to be implemented in India. Indians only behave when they don’t have access to money. Blacklisting Indians who misbehave in and outside of India would remove access to any kind of credit for a period of a month. They would only have access to very basic living expenses for their family. It would work wonders for instilling civic sense into Indian people and would tidy up the country. Indians should also receive incentives for reporting other Indian people who misbehave like this.”
Supporting public accountability, a third user commented, “This is a good thing that videos are being made and people are being shamed. Let’s hope it becomes a trend.”
Another reaction reflected disbelief over such behaviour, with one user writing, “How can these people be so stupid. This is so basic that no education, awareness is needed. Some things should be inherent. Itni bewakoof public kaise ho sakti.”
Several social media users also pointed out that popular public spaces like the Gateway of India need stricter monitoring, surveillance, and heavier fines to discourage repeat offences. While civic bodies have acted against littering in previous cases, the identity of the man seen in the video has not yet been established.

Highlighting the impact on children, one comment read, “He has a daughter with him.. That’s what he is teaching her. @mybmc @Mumbai Police must catch hold of him n teach him a lesson throw him in the ocean.”
Sharing a personal perspective, another user said, “I’m 34 and was never taught not to litter-streets, parks, buses, trains. Sane for my family. This is true for 100+ crore Indians. Civic sense won’t magically appear. Not in 50 years-unless strict penalties are enforced.”
Another comment stressed the importance of early education, stating, “And teaching his kids too that his act is ok.. schools need to take up civic sense in a BIG way else our next gen will also be lost… use the Japanese method.. make kids clean their classrooms before they start classes… dignity of labour and need for cleanliness… make it fun, not a chore.”
