Pune: PMC Slaps ₹10 Lakh Fine On Developer For Dumping Debris In Mutha River
Pune, February 13, 2026: After debris was found dumped in the Mutha riverbed, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Thursday fined a private developer ₹10 lakh, issued a stop-work notice at the construction site linked to the waste, and filed a police complaint against those involved.
The debris was discovered barely 200 feet from the PMC headquarters, sparking widespread public anger. Following media reports, the civic body initiated swift action.
Pune Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram stated that immediate steps were taken once the incident came to light. He directed officials to register a police complaint and identify the origin of the debris.
Investigations revealed that the waste material came from a Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) project in the Shivajinagar Tofkhana area, being developed by Akansha Developers. Authorities have fined the firm ₹10 lakh, sealed the site, halted construction work, and registered a police case against the developer and other responsible individuals. A notice has also been served to Nihal Shaikh of the company.
Pune Mayor Manjusha Nagpure instructed officials to take stringent measures to ensure such violations are not repeated. Senior officials said the commissioner reviewed CCTV footage to trace the source and asked officers to remain at the police station until the case was formally registered.
To prevent similar incidents, the commissioner has ordered the establishment of a permanent monitoring system along the riverbed. On Thursday, another instance of garbage dumping was reported, prompting the PMC to deploy vigilance teams for regular patrols and strict enforcement.
