Pune, April 1, 20206:  The Pune Municipal Corporation has initiated action against hazardous and illegal overhead cables across the city, aiming to enhance public safety and streamline urban infrastructure.

The decision comes in response to growing concerns over risks posed by dangling and unregulated cables, which could endanger citizens. Authorities have planned to remove such cables and gradually shift them underground.

According to officials, an extensive network of nearly 3,600 kilometers of overhead cables has been identified across Pune. A phased weekly drive will be undertaken to target and dismantle illegal installations.

The move has gained urgency due to the increased risk of cables snapping during the monsoon season or strong winds, potentially leading to accidents and disruptions.

Officials clarified that government and police-authorized cables will be exempted from the drive. The focus will primarily remain on unauthorized telephone and private cables.

Notices have already been issued to concerned operators, and authorities have warned that failure to comply with regulations may lead to legal action in the coming days.
