Pune-Mumbai Missing Link: Will There Be a Toll? Eknath Shinde Makes Major Announcement
Mumbai–Pune Expressway’s 13.3 km missing link to open on May 1, cutting travel time by 30 minutes and distance by 6 km. Key details on tunnels, traffic rules, and benefits.
Pune, April 25, 2026:
In a major boost to connectivity between Mumbai and Pune, the long-awaited “missing link” project on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway is set to open for traffic from May 1, marking Maharashtra Day. The project, developed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), is in its final stage and is expected to significantly reduce travel time and congestion.
The 13.3-kilometre missing link will shorten the travel distance by nearly 6 kilometres and cut journey time by approximately 30 minutes. The new stretch will help motorists bypass the steep curves and घाट sections of Bhor Ghat, ensuring a smoother and safer commute.
The project is scheduled to be inaugurated by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
No Additional Toll, Limited Access Initially
Authorities have clarified that no additional toll will be charged for using the missing link. However, for the first six months, only cars and buses will be allowed on this stretch. Heavy vehicles and those carrying hazardous materials will continue to use the existing ghat section.
Currently, around 70% of the traffic on the expressway comprises cars and buses, while 30% consists of heavy vehicles. The new link is expected to ease traffic congestion, especially during weekends when routes near Lonavala and Khandala witness heavy traffic.
Engineering Marvel with Record-Breaking Tunnel
The project features two major tunnels measuring 8.9 km and 1.9 km in length. Notably, the 8.92-kilometre tunnel, with a width of 23.5 metres, is among the longest and widest in Asia and is likely to be listed in the Guinness World Records.
Additionally, a 650-metre-long cable-stayed bridge has been constructed at a height of over 180 metres in Tiger Valley, showcasing advanced engineering capabilities. The project has been executed by Afcons Infrastructure Limited.
Relief from Traffic Congestion
The Mumbai–Pune Expressway frequently experiences heavy congestion, particularly on weekends and during holidays. The new missing link is expected to provide much-needed relief to commuters by reducing bottlenecks and ensuring faster, more efficient travel between the two cities.
With its official opening just days away, the project is being seen as a game-changer for Maharashtra’s transport infrastructure.
