Kolhapuri Chappals Go Global: Prada Launches ‘Made in India’ Collection, Partners with Artisans for Global Expansion
Mumbai, April 30, 2026: Traditional Kolhapuri chappals, a symbol of India’s rich craftsmanship, have stepped onto the global luxury stage as Prada unveiled a limited-edition “Made in India” sandal collection crafted by artisans from Maharashtra and Karnataka.
The collection, inspired by the iconic Kolhapuri design, blends traditional handcrafting techniques with Prada’s contemporary styling and premium materials. The products are now being made available across select international stores, marking a significant milestone for Indian artisans.

From Controversy to Collaboration
The collaboration follows earlier concerns over similarities between Prada’s designs and traditional Kolhapuri chappals. After discussions with government bodies and artisan groups, Prada partnered with LIDCOM and LIDKAR to formally recognise and promote the craft.
This partnership led to a structured initiative aimed at taking the heritage footwear global while ensuring fair participation of Indian artisans.
Global Rollout Across Stores
Under the agreement, Kolhapuri-inspired sandals crafted by Indian artisans have been introduced in nearly 40 Prada stores worldwide, giving the traditional footwear an international luxury identity.
Training Program for Artisans
As part of the initiative, Prada has announced a fully funded three-year training programme for artisans across eight districts in Maharashtra and Karnataka where Kolhapuri chappals are traditionally made.
Developed in collaboration with National Institute of Fashion Technology and Karnataka Institute of Leather & Fashion Technology, the programme will focus on:
- Enhancing design and technical skills
- Introducing digital tools and market insights
- Adapting traditional craftsmanship to modern demands
Around 180 to 300 artisans aged between 18 and 45 are expected to benefit. Top performers will also get an opportunity to train at Prada’s academy in Italy.
Preserving Heritage, Embracing Innovation
Kolhapuri chappals, with roots tracing back centuries, are known for their durability and distinctive design. Traditionally crafted across regions in Maharashtra and Karnataka, the footwear received Geographical Indication (GI) status, recognising its cultural and regional significance.
The collaboration aims to preserve this heritage while enabling innovation through modern materials, evolving designs, and global exposure.
Boost to ‘Made in India’ Craftsmanship
Officials stated that the initiative highlights the strength of “Made in India” products on the global stage. By combining traditional skills with modern design training, the project is expected to create new economic opportunities for artisans while ensuring the survival of the craft for future generations.
The move is also seen as a step towards building a sustainable bridge between heritage craftsmanship and the global luxury market.
