Pimpri-Chinchwad, 14th May: The Pavana River, considered the lifeline of the city, is once again facing a serious pollution threat due to alleged administrative negligence. Over the past few days, untreated chemical wastewater has reportedly been discharged directly into the river, turning parts of it into what citizens are calling a “drainage stream.” On Thursday morning, thick layers of white foam were seen floating on the river surface between Kejudevi Bandhara and the Thergaon immersion ghat, raising fresh concerns over worsening pollution levels.

The toxic discharge has already severely damaged the river’s biodiversity. Earlier incidents of mass fish deaths in the Pavana River had also triggered outrage among environmentalists and residents. While authorities continue to speak about river conservation, citizens allege that the administration has failed to take effective action against polluting industries.

Critics claim the civic body’s environment department limits its action to issuing notices and collecting water samples whenever pollution-related reports surface, but fails to ensure strict action against the responsible companies. Residents allege that the action taken against polluters is merely symbolic, allowing contamination to continue unchecked.

The alarming sight of foam-covered water near Kejudevi Bandhara and Thergaon on Thursday once again brought the issue of river pollution into the spotlight. Citizens are questioning what happens after water samples are collected and why no visible long-term action is taken. Many have also raised concerns over possible collusion between officials and industries responsible for discharging chemical waste into the river.

The issue has also sparked fears over public health and water safety, as the Pavana River is a major source of water supply for the city. Citizens are now questioning how effective the purification process can be if such large quantities of chemicals are entering the river regularly.

Environmental activists and local residents have demanded immediate and permanent measures to curb pollution in the river. Anger is also mounting against the civic administration for its alleged indifference, with demands growing for criminal cases to be filed against those responsible for polluting the river and endangering public health.
