Referring to everyday household cooking practices, he said, “Jitne log khane wale honge, unki sankhya ke anupat mein apne rashan dein, faltu khana na banaye.” He also suggested that if an unexpected guest arrives, families can prepare additional food separately instead of routinely cooking excess quantities.

The appeal comes amid broader discussions around rising fuel costs and resource conservation. Yogi Adityanath also highlighted the need to reduce dependency on LPG and use available resources sensibly.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s earlier appeal asking households to reduce cooking oil consumption by 10 per cent, linking mindful consumption with both health benefits and national resource conservation.

Practical ways families can reduce food and fuel wastage at home.

One way is maintaining proper quantity control while cooking. Experts note that many households often prepare excess food, which later leads to spoilage and waste. Families were advised to remain mindful of daily consumption patterns.

An important recommendation is planning meals in advance. Preparing a meal plan helps households understand exactly what ingredients are required and in what quantity. This can prevent unnecessary purchases, duplication of ingredients and impulsive cooking.

Importance of buying only what is needed. Before shopping, families were advised to check existing pantry supplies and refrigerator stock to avoid over-purchasing and food spoilage.

Experts suggest using measuring cups, bowls and standard portions while cooking. According to the report, estimating food quantities approximately often results in excessive preparation, especially for staples such as rice, flour, lentils and pasta.

Another major point is need to store cooked food properly. Keeping older food items at the front of refrigerators, using airtight containers and maintaining proper cooling temperatures can help preserve freshness and reduce wastage.

Families should reuse leftovers creatively instead of discarding them. Examples included turning leftover rice into fried rice, using leftover rajma for tikkis and repurposing rotis into other dishes.

Mindful cooking practices not only reduce food wastage but also help households save money, fuel and kitchen resources while promoting sustainable living.
